I was excited to find these Current/Elliott purple snakeskin jeans on sale last week. I first pictured them dressed down with an oversized tee and boots, but that idea quickly fell by the wayside when my black disc sequin top and patent heels were calling my name for an evening out. I added this sassy woven clutch to pay tribute to the little girl in me who always named pink and purple as her favorite colors (obviously).

Ooh! Let’s take a quick moment to check in about all the other ways we can connect, shall we? I’m definitely a big social media person and I would love to see you all on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram (thelifestyled). I tend to post different things in different places – you know, to keep things interesting. You can also follow on Bloglovin‘, which is my personal favorite way to stay updated on the blogs I love. Try it out if you haven’t already. Thank you so much for your comments (which I LOVE to read) and continued support!

55 Colors

01.23.2012

I’ve recently made a wonderful discovery. Every jeans brand under the sun has come out with their own version of the colored jean, but they all pose the same problems for me (and therefore others too, right?): 1. Too short (super bright + cropped do not an elongated leg make), 2. Too low (why is the muffin top something to accentuate?), 3. Not enough color choices. Then, last week I wandered into the Joe’s store in Santa Monica and my eyes lit up when I saw a wall full of stacks and stacks of jeans in every color of the rainbow – 55 colors to be exact. Not only do they have by far the best shade selection, but I also fell in love with the fit. It’s a bit higher  on the waist than most of their competitors – perfect for the cropped tops we miiiight decide to dabble in, and a 34″ inseam – long enough for us taller girls, and still great for most everyone else (I love a dramatic ankle scrunch when there’s some extra length on a skinny jean). Plus, once you’ve fallen in love with your colors of choice, you can move on to the basic washes for your everyday variety. I can’t wait to start my collection (as follows)…

I think everyone has a go-to uniform. I don’t just mean a general look that we tend to gravitate towards, I mean an actual uniform – the same exact few pieces that we consistently reach for before anything else when we’re getting ready in the morning. For me, this is that outfit. If I had to get dressed with my eyes closed, I would automatically reach for this American Apparel tri-blend gray v-neck (I have a few of them), dark skinny jeans, and a black blazer. If I’m feeling like I need some extra comfort (if I have a long day of shopping ahead of me), I’ll do these glittery sneakers with soft socks instead of the other usual choice of my black flats. What makes this look work so well for everyday is that it feels comfortable and unfussy, yet it still can look put together enough for anything the day might throw at me.

Golden Girls

Emma Stone in Lanvin
Nicole Kidman in Versace
Salma Hayek in Gucci
Elle MacPherson in Zac Posen
Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

Golden Globes night is a lovely simple pleasure for a Sunday evening in January, is it not? It’s a free-for-all of movie and TV star fashion gawking and it kicks off the whole season of red carpet goodness. This year turned out a few favorites of mine. The girls in Gucci (Evan Rachel Wood and Salma Hayek) are first on the list as those are the dresses I would most like to own myself. ERW couldn’t have worn a dress that suits her better. I haven’t been impressed with any of Nicole Kidman’s choices in the past few years but this Versace studded number really won me over. Emma Stone’s Lanvin eagle belt was such a strong touch (here we go again with the animals) and Elle Macpherson radiated in her angelic, age defying Zac Posen tulle. Sofia Vergara reminded me why I love Vera Wang, and the curve enhancing dress really showed off her sass. Do tell – who did you love (or not really love) on the GG red carpet?

Animal House

Animal House

1. 3.1. Phillip Lim belt, 2. Gemma Lister earrings, 3. Wildfox cardigan, 4. Marc by Marc Jacobs flats, 5. Carven jumper, 6. Miss Selfridge brooch, 7. Asos hat, 8. Cellapod iPhone case, 9. Bex Rox ring

The cat’s out of the bag. If you’ve seen any of my recent posts (take this or this por ejemplo), it’s clear that I have a thing for animal likeness fashion. Whether it’s a ram horn, a python print, or a stegosaurus spike, I love to add little animal aspect to my outfit whenever possible. Leopard print is an absolutely crucial staple in my wardrobe, almost as if it’s a solid neutral, so isn’t it a gas to push it a step further into full-on animal costumery? These pieces are a fun touch of sass and kitsch without teetering into childish. Perfect for a weekend of unadulterated mischief. See you next week!

Before heading to New Jersey for Christmas, I panicked about not being warm enough so I picked up this faux fur stole at H&M. I loved not only the price ($17.95!) but also the fact that it can be layered over almost anything – in 20 or 60 degree weather. It remained glued to the collar of my wool coat to keep me cozy on the east coast, and now I’m loving it over SoCal winter friendly outfits, like this pastel ensemble which features my favorite blush blazer plucked straight from my spring wardrobe. As you know, I’m usually more of a dark neutrals girl but it sure is nice to soften things up a bit every now and then.

The Daily Grind

As leisurely weekends come to a close, I secretly enjoy shifting back into my routine on Monday morning. I love the buzz of energy and possibilites that come with the start of a new week. Even though I have a perfectly good coffee maker at home, I take pleasure in the ritual of walking out to get my morning coffee. Starbucks is my shop of choice – our little Brentwood spot has such a pleasant staff, a fancy Clover machine, and the occasional celebrity sighting. When I’m feeling extra inspired I’ll get all dolled up for the occasion, but most of the time I like to throw on the most comfortable and grog-friendly ensemble. Shlep can still be chic with some clever layering and a bit of lipgloss. Happy Monday!

The Year of the Dragon
Dragon Garb: Rebecca Minkoff bag, Roberto Cavalli ring, Zara heels, Comme des Garçons wallet, Deborah Lippman Across Universe, OPI Mermaids Tears, Chanel Peridot, Asos harness, Desire Clothing dress, Deborah Marquit Giardino di Fiori bra, Acne sweater, Kelly Wearstler clutch, Lanvin flats, Eddie Borgo collar, Peter Pilotto skirt, Tsumori Chisato sunglasses

Is it just me or does this year already have a new kind of energy? There’s a certain fire in the air – a feeling of anticipation for big things to happen. 2012 is the year of the dragon and boy am I liking it already. The dragon is the only animal in Chinese zodiac years that is not a real species – something that can inspire us to think beyond our basic reality. What better than a fierce fire breathing reptile to give us power and passion to conquer the impossible this year?

Lately I’ve been consistently reaching for some of the same choice style elements: neon pink (as witnessed in yesterday’s post), black leather (nothing new here), and silk scarves – specifically this new Alexander McQueen beauty which was a Christmas gift from my husband. It’s been glued to my body ever since – going through airport security, walking the dog, groggily making my way to Starbucks in the morning, or all dressed up for a night out. Don’t expect it to subside anytime soon. You may not be able to see its signature skulls in these pics, but trust me – they’re subtly placed within the croc and tweed, and they keep me oh so safe.

Phew! The holidays were a complete whirlwind, weren’t they? After a marathon month of shopping, decorating, wrapping, partying, and traveling, I am glad to be back in the saddle and diving into a new year. But before grabbing 2012 by the pants, I thought I’d share a few slices of life/style from the season. Aside from Words With Friends, Instagram is my absolute favorite thing about the iPhone which I finally got in November, and I can’t stop posting pics and gawking at everyone else’s. As you can see, the season adorned me in lots of sparkles, polka dots, bubbly, and a certain neon pink shirt I can’t seem to take off. How about that twins moment from the West Elm party with Bri, Margaux, and Sarah? Totally unplanned of course. You were great 2011, but 2012 is going to be the most stylish and inspiring year yet. Mark my words!
